Past Activities
SENESCENCE2030 Annual Conference and Workshop | University of Coimbra, Portugal | 19-20 May 2026
Objectives | To bring together researchers, clinicians, industry representatives and policymakers to discuss recent advances in cellular senescence and strengthen collaboration within the SENESCENCE2030 Action.
Organisers | Ana Luisa Carvalho, Aniello Cerrato, Giuseppe Martini, Marco Demaria and Pasquale Maffia.
Highlights | Sessions organised by WG1, WG2 and WG3, an academic–industry workshop, industry pitches and expert discussions on state-of-the-art senescence research.
Participants | 168 people, including 80 in-person participants
Key Outcomes | Knowledge exchange across disciplines, strengthened collaborations and discussions on translating senescence research into clinical and industrial applications.
Next Steps | Continued collaboration through the Action’s Working Groups, future meetings and networking activities. Prepare a meeting summary for publication.
SENESCENCE2030 2nd Training School | University of Coimbra, Portugal | 20-22 May 2026
Scientific focus | “Physiological versus pathological cell senescence and opportunities for intervention”.
Organisers | Rosa Spinelli with support from Han Li.
Participants | Congratulations to the 8 PhD students, 7 Postdocs and 1 Assistant Professor from Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom who were selected to attend our Second Training School!
Training sessions | Delivered by leading experts, including Daniel Munoz-Espin (tumour microenvironment), Ignacio Palmero (developmental senescence), Luca Pangrazzi (immune cells senescence) and Rosa Spinelli (senescence in metabolic tissues).
Student presentations | Poster and flash talk topics included therapy-induced senescence and cancer, senescence in metabolic and cardiovascular disease, immunosenescence and inflammaging, neurodegeneration, tissue repair/regeneration, senotherapies.
Round tables | “Senescence from cell cultures to humans through model organisms” and “Opportunities and challenges for senescence-targeted interventions” fostering collaborative exchange.
SENESCENCE2030 Alumni Initiative Architecture Meeting | University of Innsbruck, Austria | 7th July 2026
Objectives | To co-design the vision, governance, strategic priorities and implementation roadmap for the SENESCENCE2030 Alumni Initiative, supporting collaboration beyond the lifetime of the Action.
Organisers | Luca Pangrazzi and Birgit Weinberger, with contributions from SENESCENCE2030 leadership, Scientific Committee members, Alumni representatives and invited experts.
Participants | Invited participants joined the hybrid morning round table, while the afternoon community consultation had 47 online participants.
Highlights | Collaborative discussions focused on five strategic pillars: Collaboration Hub, Research Accelerator, Methods & Innovation Hub, Mentorship & Career Development, and Visibility & Community.
Key Outcomes | Broad support for a scientifically driven and inclusive Alumni ecosystem, with operational teams established to support mentoring, the Alumni database, publications, communication, webinars and Alumni Spotlight activities.
Next Steps | Priorities include launching the governance teams, developing the Alumni database, initiating the mentorship programme, starting a collaborative publication strategy and strengthening communication and webinars. Longer-term plans include a Seed Idea Incubator, Alumni workshops, grant matchmaking, White Papers and Special Issues.

Senescence2030 International Symposium | 8-9 September 2026 | Naples, Italy
For SENESCENCE2030 Action members attendance is by invitation via the e-COST platform. Please note that participants attending in person are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.
We are also pleased to welcome external participants, who may attend the Symposium either in person or online. Action members and external participants wishing to attend the Symposium in person are kindly invited to contact Dr. Rosa Spinelli (rosa.spinelli2@unina.it), as places at the venue are limited.
